Understanding Hawaii's Tint Laws
Hawaii regulates window tint using a measurement called Visible Light Transmission, or VLT, which is the percentage of light that passes through your glass and film combined. Front side windows must allow at least 35% VLT, with a small variance built into the law to account for differences between meters. In 2025, Act 129 updated the rules for rear windows, so sedans can now be tinted to any darkness on the rear side and rear windows, matching the freedom that trucks, SUVs, and vans already had, as long as the vehicle keeps two working side mirrors. Windshields are limited to a non-reflective strip along the top few inches, and mirrored or metallic finishes are not permitted on any window.
